The Best Way to Thank a Driver? Keep Them Off the Shoulder.

A tire fails at 65 miles per hour, or it fails in the yard on a Tuesday morning. The tire does not care which. Your driver does.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week runs September 13 to 19 this year, and the industry will do what it always does: cookouts at the terminal, gift cards, social posts, maybe a banner over the fuel island. All of it matters. Drivers notice when their work is seen.

But this year's theme, "From Highways to Homes: We Appreciate Truckers," points at something bigger than a week of gestures. The American Trucking Associations reminds us that 3.6 million professional drivers keep this country supplied, and that more than 80% of U.S. communities rely exclusively on trucks for their freight. The people doing that job deserve appreciation they can feel in the seat, not just at the September picnic.

Here is one that lasts all year: fewer hours stranded on the shoulder.

What the latest roadside data says

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance released the results of its 2026 International Roadcheck in late August. Inspectors conducted 54,575 inspections across North America over three days in May. Tires were the second most common vehicle out-of-service violation, accounting for 2,914 violations, or roughly 21% of the vehicle total.

And the trend is moving the wrong direction. Tire out-of-service violations have risen for three consecutive Roadchecks: 2,821 in 2024, 2,899 in 2025, and 2,914 in 2026. This year's count came from fewer total inspections than last year's, meaning inspectors found more bad tires while checking fewer trucks.

Here is the part most fleets miss: those numbers likely understate the problem. Under current out-of-service criteria, a vehicle equipped with an automatic tire inflation system can pass a roadside inspection with a leaking tire, as long as the system is holding pressure above the out-of-service threshold. ATIS keeps air in the tire, but it does it silently. It treats the symptom without telling anyone there is a problem. The slow leak is still there, quietly getting worse, and the first person to find out is often the driver, on the shoulder.

Read that from the driver's seat. Every one of those tire violations represents a truck that was rolling with a problem the driver could not see. Some of those problems get caught at an inspection station. The rest get caught on the road, often at the worst possible moment, in the form of an emergency roadside service (ERS) call.

An ERS event is not just a cost line for the fleet. For the driver, it is hours lost on a shoulder with traffic passing at highway speed, a missed delivery window, a longer day, and a story they would rather not tell at home. Roadside breakdowns put drivers in one of the most dangerous positions the job has.

Appreciation you can engineer

Most tire failures do not come out of nowhere. Pressure drifts. Temperature climbs. The warning signs are there, but a walkaround with a thump of the boot cannot read them.

That is the problem Smart Predictive Tire was built for. It is a connected tire solution from Michelin Connected Fleet that ingests real-time TPMS data from your existing hardware, including pressure and temperature, and turns it into actionable insight through predictive analytics, delivered through Michelin Connected Fleet. Instead of reacting to a blowout, your maintenance team sees the tire issue developing and addresses it in the yard, on your schedule, before your driver ever feels it.

If your fleet runs automatic tire inflation, this is the visibility layer it is missing. Inflation keeps the truck moving today. Information tells you which tire is leaking, how fast, and when to pull it, so a masked slow leak never gets the chance to become a roadside event.

From insight to action

An alert nobody acts on is just noise. The value of tire intelligence shows up when it changes what your maintenance team does next.

The industry is learning this the hard way. In a 2026 fleet maintenance survey, 67% of fleets said they struggle to predict which vehicles are at risk of failure, and the cost of guessing wrong is steep. Industry analysis from ATRI and FleetNet America puts unplanned downtime at 8.7 days per vehicle per year, at an estimated $448 to $760 per day in lost productivity. And a reactive repair costs three to nine times more than the same work done on a planned basis, once you add towing, emergency labor rates, expedited parts, and missed delivery windows.

That is why Smart Predictive Tire is built to feed a workflow, not just a dashboard. A developing tire issue becomes a prioritized maintenance task your team schedules alongside planned service, in the yard, at shop rates. The tire gets fixed for a fraction of the roadside cost, the truck stays on its route, and every prevented emergency call is a measurable line in your cost-per-mile story. Data becomes insight, insight becomes a decision, and the decision becomes work that actually happens, on your terms.

And the person who benefits most from every one of those yard repairs is the driver who never had to make the call from the shoulder.

The result is a safer day for the people behind the wheel. Smart Predictive Tire helps fleets extend tire life, reduce emergency events, and improve cost per mile, and it can help prevent up to 80% of ERS events on the road.*

That last number is worth sitting with during Appreciation Week. Every prevented ERS event is a driver who did not spend the afternoon on the shoulder. That is what appreciation looks like when it is built into the operation instead of scheduled onto the calendar.

More than a supplier

At Michelin Connected Fleet, we think about driver safety the way we think about everything else: as a partnership. We work with your fleet's own mobility data to make recommendations that reduce costs, improve productivity, and protect the people who make the whole system run. Nobody knows tires like Michelin, and Smart Predictive Tire puts that expertise to work for the driver in the cab, every mile.

So yes, fire up the grill next week. Hand out the gift cards. Say thank you out loud.

Then make the thank-you permanent. Give your drivers a fleet that catches tire problems before the road does.
